Casamigos Mezcal Artesanal – 1 Star, Really?

The Mezcal community seems to have a hard time swallowing Casamigos Mezcal

Next up on Mezcal Tasting for Mezcal Buzz, I got my hands on Casamigos Mezcal. This celebrity brand comes from actors George Clooney, Michael Meldman, and businessman Rande Gerber. I seriously feel that the celebrity mezcales tend to lean more towards the industrial mezcal category, and are overpriced for what the actual product is. In the case of Casamigos mezcal, it’s not far from that. It seems like the logical move for the Casamigos Tequila brand, owned by Diageo – one of the largest producers of spirits and beers, was to branch off into the “mezcal” category, just as mezcal is seeing a huge economic boom.

Casamigos Mezcal “artesanal” averages a 1-star rating over at mezcalreviews.com – the consumer there does not seem to be feeling this brand. I personally, do think it is overrated, definitely overpriced, and to call it a “mezcal artesanal” is a stretch. However, I had to try it for myself of course, and with such low expectations I e expected due to its reviews, I must say it did surpass expectations. I do give it a decent 3 stars, 1 star seems kind of harsh, it’s definitely now garbage. If within your means, or presented the opportunity, I recommend you try this mezcal for yourself and make your own opinion, and objectively compare it to other mezcales, not by brand, but by agave.

Tasting

Casamigos mezcal has fragrant herbal and fruit notes, with traces of smokiness. I personally sense scents of citric zest, easy to inhale and re-visit with a warming sensation, very small hint of acidic alcohol. Flavor notes include a slight sour sensation with a decent smoke to it. Hints of black pepper with a prickly sensation. What we have here is a palatable Mezcal, and I recommend you give it a shot.
