Mezcal Real Minero Largo Karwinskii | Tasting & Review
Welcome back to another Mezcal Monday on Mezcal Buzz! Today, we’re tasting a mezcal that’s considered one of the world’s finest—Mezcal Real Minero Largo Karwinskii. With a solid 4.5-star rating on MezcalReviews.com, this bottle is a true standout. Let’s dive in!
About Mezcal Real Minero
This exceptional mezcal comes from Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca, a region known for its traditional production methods. The Ángeles Carreño family, whose mezcalero lineage spans generations, continues to craft outstanding spirits. Today, the brand is led by Graciela Ángeles Carreño, daughter of the legendary Don Lorenzo. She not only oversees production but also spearheads Project LAM, a vital reforestation initiative aimed at preserving agave biodiversity.
During my visit to Oaxaca with the Agave Spirits Institute, I had the privilege of touring the Real Minero palenque with Graciela herself. It was an unforgettable experience, and I was lucky enough to bring home this incredible bottle—with a personal message from Graciela included!
Production Process
What makes Mezcal Real Minero unique?
- Distilled in Clay Pots: Real Minero uses a Filipino-style still, different from the more common clay pot stills.
- Underground Pit Roasting: Unlike stone-lined pits, Real Minero’s earthen pits impart a distinct roast character.
- Mechanical Shredding: The cooked agave is shredded using an electric shredder rather than a tahona.
- Sabino Wood Fermentation: The fermentation process takes place in Sabino (Cypress) wood vats, adding complexity to the final spirit.
The batch I’m reviewing today clocks in at 49.65% ABV, with Edgar Ángeles Carreño as the master distiller.
