Inside the Mind of a Master Blender: Oscar Vásquez of Tierra de Ensueño Tequila

At the heart of every great tequila is a team of passionate artisans. Tasting, Education & Community at Salud Amigos Fest

Oscar opened the conversation by sharing how meaningful events like Salud Amigos Fest are—not just for showcasing tequila, but for building community, encouraging consumer education, and celebrating Mexican spirits. With dozens of brands offering tastings and connecting directly with guests, it’s a rare and valuable opportunity to sample everything from tequila and mezcal to sotol under one roof.

“It’s like walking into a liquor store where every bottle is open for you to taste,” Oscar explained.

What Is a Master Blender in Tequila?

While the term “Maestro Tequilero” is widely recognized, Oscar’s role as Master Blender for Tierra de Ensueño reflects a nuanced craft. Collaborating with fellow Maestro Tequilero Sergio Cruz, the pair develop unique profiles by lightly aging their blanco tequila for just 14 to 16 days. Though not long enough to qualify as a reposado under Mexican regulations, this approach allows the liquid to take on subtle barrel influence while maintaining the bold integrity of a blanco.

“It’s about preserving the tequila’s original character while adding complexity,” Oscar said.

This blending process is not new in the tequila world—especially for aged expressions—but the precision and experimentation involved are what make Tierra de Ensueño’s tequilas stand out.

Blending Science with Personal Taste

Oscar emphasized that tequila blending is both an art and a science. It requires technical experience, a refined palate, and a good dose of intuition. He likened it to the respected role of Master Blenders in Japanese whisky culture—those who determine the final flavor by marrying multiple barrels for optimal aroma, color, and balance.

“You can’t just add 1 liter plus 2 liters and get the perfect tequila. It’s not math—it’s personal taste,” he shared.

Oscar also noted that consumer feedback is essential. At events like Salud Amigos Fest, he listens carefully to what people love—or don’t love—about the profile. He takes note of preferred flavor indicators like fruity, sweet, citrus, or herbal notes, while also watching for red flags like bitterness or saltiness.

What’s Next for Tierra de Ensueño?

While the brand currently offers its blanco expression and a few limited edition specials, Oscar revealed that a reposado and high-proof expressions are already in development. The goal is to continue exploring new palates while staying true to the quality and creativity that define Tierra de Ensueño.

“These festivals are the perfect place to test new products and get real feedback from the community,” he said.

Final Thoughts

Oscar’s passion and transparency are a testament to the evolving role of tequila artisans who not only respect tradition but also lean into innovation. Whether you’re new to agave spirits or a seasoned aficionado, Oscar’s work with Tierra de Ensueño shows just how layered, experimental, and personal tequila can be.
