Bottling My First Micro-Batch of Mezcal
Welcome back to another Mezcal Monday on Mezcal Buzz! Today, I’m sharing something extra special—my very first micro-batch of mezcal that I bottled and labeled myself. From being part of the roasting process in Oaxaca to designing my own labels, this was an exciting hands-on experience.
The Mezcal: A Special Batch from Oaxaca
This mezcal comes from La Mixteca, where I spent time at the palenque of Teósa during Level 4 of the Agave Spirits Institute certification. The batch is made from Agave Espadín Verde, a wild, endemic variety distinct from the cultivated Espadín you commonly find. Alongside a collective of 13 mezcaleros, we helped roast the agave, making this a truly personal batch.
Bottling Process: What I Used
I ended up with just over 4 liters of this mezcal and decided to bottle it up for easy sharing. Here’s how I did it:
1. Choosing the Right Bottles
I used 250ml glass bottles—a common size that’s easy to find online or at glass supply stores. They come with built-in seals to keep things professional.
2. Designing the Labels
I have experience in graphic design, so I used Adobe Illustrator to create a custom label. If you’re making your own, you can use Canva, Photoshop, or even simple label makers.
3. Printing & Cutting the Labels
I printed my labels at Office Max on standard sticker paper. Using crop marks, I cut them out cleanly to apply to the bottles. If you want a more professional look, you can order waterproof vinyl labels online.
DIY Bottling: A Great Way to Share Mezcal
Bottling your own mezcal—whether it’s a special batch or just a fun project—is a fantastic way to create something unique. With the right bottles and a little creativity, you can turn any mezcal into a personalized gift or collector’s item.
